The small town of Jageshwar in
the Kumaon hills of Uttar Pradesh has a complex of about 200 ancient
and medieval temples. Most of these temples are dedicated to the various
manifestations of Lord Shiva. The great temple complex is situated in
a narrow and beautiful valley covered with Cedar trees. A continuous
chain of snow capped mountains looms over the temples where silence
reigns supreme and not even a leaf rustles, as though afraid to disturb
the stillness.
Two
streams Nandini and Surabhi flow down the hills and meet near the sacred
spot. Dense grove of Cedar trees, perpetual verdure, and sweet murmur
of the riverlets give a peculiar charm and sanctity to this place.
The idol at Jageshwar is considered to be one of
the twelve Jyotirlingas (the most sacred shrines of Lord Shiva) in India,
where thousands of Shiva devotees cometo offer prayers. The oldest shrine
is of the 'Mrityunjaya' and the biggest shrine is of the'Dindeshwara'.
A huge fair is every year at Jageshwar during the monsoons. After breakfast,
leave for Nainital by surface (approx. 3 hrs).
